Mentoring assists in the Academy’s goal of equipping our students with a realistic grounding for the realities of working within the global fashion arena, at the same time as offering opportunities to engage with and learn from each other and some of London’s successful fashion tutors, designers, and fashion brands.
In addition, we recognise the value of peer-to-peer mentorship, which reinforces the culture of sharing advice and support throughout the student's time in the academy. At certain pressure points in the student journey, peer mentors are allocated to alleviate anxieties and support our students.
Learning at the JCA is participatory, hands-on and above all, interactive. We don’t believe in lecturers broadcasting knowledge to silent audiences, but in learning by doing with the support of our mentors.
Our academic staff are among the best in their field, professionally within fashion, and pedagogically within education. They are also friendly and approachable people who work together to help create a professionally-focused learning community that includes students, staff, and associates from the wider fashion industry.

Complementing formal teaching, the group ‘crit’ and tutorial system offers JCA students with close supervision and iterative feedback. Students are encouraged to orally communicate, visually share, defend, analyse, and critique the ideas and work of others as well as their own. These regular sessions, which take place in small groups with your tutor and fellow students, provide an important opportunity to develop and reflect, forming an essential part of your learning journey. You’ll see your work in context with the creations of other students, and cross-pollinate ideas and approaches. Week-on-week, you’ll develop your critical faculties and learn to absorb and use constructive criticism, forming close working relationships with fellow designers at the same time.
